This week. Oh man, this week.

We got a taste of what it’s like when your home is destroyed by the environment. I can only imagine the devastation for families who have their entire homes destroyed by fire, floods, hurricanes and tornadoes.

It’s all a blur now, but I think on Thursday morning we woke up to the entire bottom floor of our apartment covered with water. Water was under the bamboo floor I had installed last summer. Every room was affected, everywhere.

I texted my floor guy and that’s when we got the news. The wood floor was finished.

The next 48 hours was trying to sort out the source of the flood, rip up the floors, inspections, drying machines and the girls displaced from their rooms.

I think the moment that broke my heart the most was when Ella saw her room. She said, “I worked so hard to clean it and make it nice and now it’s all ruined.” I didn’t reason with her, I didn’t try to explain that we would fix it, I just hugged her and realized her simple teary eyed statement pretty much summed it up for me too.

One thing I came away with from the experience given the irony that what I am working on is putting more of myself and my love into my home, is that I AM NOT my home. Things that happen to it are not necessarily happening to me. I am dealing with it and it’s a real pain, but this happening is not some failure on my part and not something that can’t be rebuilt anew.

So it was a rough week for this project of mine, but I am looking forward to getting this ordeal behind us and helping Ella make her room nice once more.
