Closet Nursery Before and After

Our building is nearly 100 years old and the closet space is incredibly limited. My husband had been using one of our larger closets as an office and then it became the dumping ground for a bunch of stuff when he no longer needed the home office space.

I had planned on turning it into my little dream closet, but then Phoebe came along and our journey with co-sleeping was ending and I was not ready to move her all the way downstairs into her sister’s room quite yet.

I decided to take that 31 square feet closet and create a little space for Phoebe.

I asked Phoebe’s godmother, Michelle Workman, if she would be willing to design her room with me. I was so excited when she said yes.

Starting from a family heirloom painting which inspired the room’s theme, Michelle picked items from The Land of Nod and directed me on paint colors for the walls and dresser. I found a dresser on Craigslist for 20 dollars and painted it. We used her sister’s crib. The room finally came together after some hurdles and I am so happy to get to share it with you now.

    • I just pulled random things from around the house. Little photo frames, some ceramics and a piece Chloe made me and other little bits. You could put Crispin’s Legos on there!

  1. I love this. My son who was just recently born doesn’t have a room and isn’t ready to move in with his sister either. such great inspiration. He had a little space in a nook we have in our living room so I’d love to upgrade it and add more “fun”

  2. I would use the gift certificate to help furnish/ decorate my daughter’s room. She is currently in my bedroom, but when we move into a bigger apartment (she’s also a Bay Area baby… Limited space over here too) in a couple of months she’ll get her own room (yay). This gift card would help it to be possible for her to have a cute room at our new place.

  3. Do you think those cubbies could work for a boys room? I’m looking for something for all of our cars. Currently they all reside in a heap in a drawer. We have virtually every character from the movie, so they might as well be part of the display.

    • For sure! They have the grey ones left on line and I think that would be really awesome in a boys room. There are tons of other options on the site as well for cool ways to display collections.

  4. She must so proud to be a big girl with her own room! I would add an important safety note- that the shelf above her bed lined with baskets etc is a danger to Phoebe. In the event of an earthquake while she’s sleeping all the sharp metal baskets, etc, would be likely to fall down on her.

    • This is a very valid concern! Thank you so much for pointing that out. I’m planning on mounting the baskets so they are secure and as well securing the objects on the side shelves. I think I should get on this today given the earthquakes going on in Southern California recently.
