Sleepless Windy Nights

I was awoken at 3am this morning by Phoebe and am unable to fall back asleep. The wind is rattling the windows and there has been some shift in my body that doesn’t make it easy to fall back asleep once I am awake in the middle of the night. Does anyone else have that?

Since it’s the middle of the night and I don’t trust myself to make much sense and don’t think a long rambling about life will do anyone any good, I will leave you with these images from an evening at the park last week with the girls.

Ok, I am going to try to get back into my bed to grab a few more minutes of sleep before Monday starts.

I think maybe if I start exercising more I might sleep better. Your thoughts?

  1. Yes, more exercise can help a lot. You can also try drinking a warm glass of milk (yeah, sorry, it works better if it’s warm) or taking a touch of melatonin (just lick it a few times or suck on the tablet for a few seconds, rather than take the whole thing–especially at 3 am!) and then go right back to bed. I never used to have that problem and now I have it just occasionally. I find for me personally it is usually connected to a hormone change, and doesn’t last very long. So good luck!

  2. Agreed it is most likely hormonal. If you can get your progesterone/estrogen tested maybe BIHR (bioidentical hormone replacement) will work. Natural creams. Worked for me like a charm.

  3. Jenny, I have been exercising 5-6 days/week (sometimes for only 30 minutes) and I have found I fall asleep much faster, sleep sounder, and feel more rested each day. I do most of it early morning (swimming at 5am!) so I am tired early at night. Although it is easier for me with 2 teenagers, try to sneak a workout in when you can with/without kids. Even a fast walk for 20-30min in the early morning in that wonderfully hilly city of yours will make you feel great :)

  4. I blame hormones too. Only because I had this for years and really didn’t sleep more than 4-5 hours a night for several years (often only 3) and all through being pregnant. Literally the day I had my baby I slept a full night sleep except when the nurse woke me every day at 4 to take my vitals and give me pain meds (c-section). But it’s been about 17 months and I’m now getting back into that pattern :( I really do think it was a hormone shift after giving birth and whatever was “fixed” by it has since gone out again. Perhaps a nutritionist could help. I’ve also taken a combo vitamin with valerian root and meletonin the last 2 nights and it seems to have helped. I still wake around 4 or 5 but I was waking much earlier. I also definitely recall waking 2-3 times throughout the night but quickly fell back asleep. I think without the herbs I would have woken and stayed up like at 2:30, etc. Good luck :)

    • It started to get better when I began walking again a few weeks ago thank goodness!

      Good luck to you too!
